Useful Vocabulary to speak The Environment
Sustainable: refers to something that can be maintained over time without causing harm to the environment or depleting resources.
Green spaces: refers to areas within a city that are dedicated to natural vegetation and trees, such as parks, gardens, and green belts.
Renewable energy: refers to sources of energy that can be replenished naturally over time, such as solar, wind, and hydro power. Energy that we can create and will not run out.
The sun is a source of renewable energy.
Emissions: refers to the gases and particles that are released into the air as a result of human activities, such as burning fossil fuels or industrial processes.
Pollution: refers to any substance or activity that has harmful effects on the environment, such as air pollution, water pollution, or plastic pollution.
Urbanisation: refers to the process by which a population becomes concentrated in cities or urban areas, often resulting in increased pollution and environmental degradation.
Biodiversity: refers to the variety of plant and animal species that exist in a particular ecosystem, such as a city or region.
Carbon footprint: refers to the amount of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide, that are emitted by a person, organization, or city.
Waste reduction: refers to the practice of reducing the amount of waste produced by a city or society, often through recycling, composting, and other methods.
Energy efficiency: refers to the practice of using energy in a more efficient and sustainable way, such as by using energy-saving appliances or improving building insulation.
Global warming (n)– the gradual warming of the earth’s temperature. Eg. Global warming is a serious problem.
A century (n) – 100 years. Eg. A century ago, we didn’t have the internet or even televisions.
Carbon dioxide – a gas released from burning things. Eg. Factories release a lot of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
A pollutant (n)– a substance that makes land, water, air, etc., dirty and not safe or suitable to use.
Eco-friendly (adj)– not harmful to the environment. Eg. Electric cars are eco-friendly.
